Promotional Event for English Version of Fourth Volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China Held in Kathmandu

A promotional event for the English version of the fourth volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China was held at Kathmandu on the morning of November 23 during the South Asia International Book Fair 2023 (Nepal). The event was under the auspices of China International Communications Group (CICG) and the Chinese Embassy in Nepal, hosted by Foreign Languages Press (FLP) and China International Book Trading Corporation, and assisted by Nepal’s China Study Center and Current Media and Research Center.

Hosted by the FLP President Hu Kaimin, the event was attended by Former Prime Minister of Nepal Jhalanath Khanal, CICG Vice President Liu Dawei, Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Chen Song, Level II Bureau Rank Official of the Publishing Bureau of Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee Guo Ruihong, Director of the Institute of Law and Human Rights Research Center of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences Mo Jihong, Level I Bureau Rank Official of the General Business Department of CICG Huang Wei, General Manager of China International Book Trading Corporation Xie Gang, General Secretary of China Study Center Upendra Gautam, Chairperson of Current Media and Research Center Pvt. Ltd. Kiran Gautam, President of Neptune Publications (Pvt) Ltd. Dinesh Kulatunga, and around 100 Chinese and Nepali academics, scholars, and representatives of international publishing industry and teachers and students from Tribhuvan University.

Khanal praised the huge progress China has made in modernization under the leadership of President Xi Jinping, in particular the great achievement of lifting so many people out of poverty in such a short period by the centenary of the Communist Party of China. He said that the development of socialism with Chinese characteristics benefits not only China but the entire world, including Nepal. Having read the first three volumes of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China, he noted that the books offered him an understanding of China’s blueprint of national development and path to modernization. He expressed delight in the publication of the fourth volume as it would provide other state leaders with ideas for national governance.

Liu Dawei emphasized that the four volumes of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China are authoritative books that give readers a comprehensive and deep understanding of Chinese modernization and modern Chinese civilization. The fourth volume, in particular, offers the latest theories of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and contains the latest practices and experience of China’s development. It embodies the principles of Chinese modernization, from the value of putting the people first and the development philosophy based on reality to an open and inclusive civilization and a global perspective that pursues cooperation and mutual benefits. It will provide new choices, references, and inspiration for other developing countries to achieve modernization independently.

Chen Song praised the Nepali people from various backgrounds for their contributions to the translation, publication, and dissemination of the Nepali version of the first and second volumes of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China. He said that they helped to spread Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era among neighboring countries, and fostered cultural exchanges and learning between China and Nepal. He also expressed that the valuable insights on China’s poverty alleviation and governance that the books provide can serve as a useful reference for Nepal’s economic development and national governance.

Mo Jihong said that Xi Jinping: The Governance of China is a book for both China and the world. It opens a window for the rest of the world to learn about and communicate with China and showcases China’s wisdom and brilliance to the world. It will offer readers from various countries, including Nepal, a comprehensive and systematic perspective on the development of contemporary China, particularly on the key issues of China’s human rights, rule of law, and whole-process people’s democracy. It will also help the international community to better appreciate China’s firm commitment, significant achievements, and innovative practices in these fields.

Upendra Gautam, Dinesh Kulatunga, and other international speakers agreed that platforms such as the South Asia International Book Fair (Nepal) allow readers from Nepal and other South Asian countries to access and read the four volumes of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China and appreciate China’s development and wisdom. Such platforms facilitate friendly communication between China and South Asian countries, and foster mutual understanding and friendship among people of different nations.

The Chinese and English versions of the fourth volume of Xi Jinping: The Governance of China were published in July 2022, followed by the French, Russian, Arabic, Spanish, Portuguese, German, Japanese, and traditional Chinese versions in June 2023. They attracted widespread attention and acclaim both domestically and internationally. The book and its translations inform the international community of the latest developments in President Xi’s thoughts, enhance their understanding of how the Chinese people have achieved and will continue to achieve success under the leadership of the CPC, and elucidate the development path and governance philosophy that China has adopted.
